    OVERVIEW

The Urban Design Studio aims to provide knowledge and skills about the tools by which transformations take place in the city, territory, environment and landscape, in relation to changing the characteristics and needs of society and the cultural and legislative framework.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The training course, to be developed through a design experiment, aims to promote the ability to recognize and govern the problems of the transformation of the city and the territory, in order to outline a settlement reorganization addressed to the revaluation of the architectural and environmental quality. They have educational goals: the acquisition of analytical techniques for the evaluation of settlement conditions; the acquisition of tools and methodologies for the definition and verification of the design; the ability to place the project in the framework of planning and development legislation; the ability to identify appropriate references and cultural, through the analysis of significant experiences developed in Italy and internationally.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide knowledge and skills about the tools by which transformations take place in the city, territory, environment and landscape, in relation to changing the characteristics and needs of society and the cultural and legislative framework.

    PREREQUISITES

The prior acquisition of the contents of the urban planning fundamentals course is required

    TEACHING METHODS

The course will be structured in lectures and guided exercises. The first part of the course is devoted to the presentation of the cultural framework and reference methodology. The second part will present the tools and techniques of interpretation of the physical characters of contemporary reality. The final part of the course is for the illustration of the methods for the construction of the project that will be developed by groups of up to three students.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The Urban Design Studio is oriented to the formation of a framework of design and instrumental references for urban planning at different scales in two project contexts: one chosen within the Genoese urban area in a context with a high density of functions and use (Val Polcevera), the second in an internal Ligurian context, which can be framed in the dimension of the internal areas. In the first case, the focus will be on the themes of urban regeneration and the reuse of the settlement structure in the scenario of the Green Logistic Valley, in the second case the attention will be focused on the theme of the historic center and tools for urban recovery. General themes of the laboratory are those of residence (reading and project), of the physical infrastructure of the city (infrastructural network, logistics, intended use), of environmental planning (urban resilience, sustainability), providing both a theoretical-interpretative framework of issues and problems inherent in this set of practices and policies; and illustrating some experiences of urban transformation, both Italian and international, highlighting the theoretical premises and the results achieved.

The tools useful for the representation of the territory project are an integral part of the course: GIS and BIM, to which specific lessons and exercises will be dedicated.
