The course is aimed at studying the strategic and competitive behaviours of firms belonging to the maritime system.
The objective is to focus on maritime system by adopting a strategic management perspective.
In particular, the course aims to:
a) define the maritime system on the basis of the concepts of cluster, value system and service-dominant logic ecosystem, understanding its structure and the interactions between:
a. "primary" activities of the maritime cluster (business areas of freight and passenger transport by sea);
b. “port required” activities to support the port (governance and ancillary services);
c. The "port induced" activities important for the competitiveness of the system (advanced tertiary sector: for example, MTO).
b) study the different strategic business areas in the maritime system, the evolutions of the macro external environment and of competition
c) Deepen the corporate and competitive strategies of the main players operating the different strategic business areas in the maritime system
An in-depth study will concern the analysis of public bodies and administrations involved in the governance of ports and intermodal transport.
The course aims to provide specialist knowledge on the business strategies and corporate governance mechanisms relating to the companies belonging to the maritime system.
At the end of the course the student will be able to know:
• the structure of the maritime system
• value creation and value co-production patterns
• analysis of the most important environmental drivers
• business and corporate strategies
• strategy implementation: internal, external, collaborative growth
• the characteristics of the national governance systems and their effects on the problems of maritime companies

The assessment aims to verify both theoretical notions regarding the strategy of maritime logistics firms and the practical knowledge of managerial tools applied in transport industries.
Attendance
The course will be taught in Italian. The attendance is not compulsory.
