OVERVIEW

The course represents to the student the entire chain of standardization of products, processes and services, starting ftom research methodologies to design and produce guidelines, technical rules and technical guides (of voluntary and mandatory nature, at international and national level), thorugh the promotion of the adoption of rules in progressively distributed use cases, til the training of people involved in the various sectors, with special attention to the bioengineering one.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main learning outcome of the course is to offer to the student a coherent corpus of knowledges on the deep meaning and the correspondent culture underlining the entire standardization process - preliminary to the certification one - in order for him to acquire competences on the significance and consequences of designing and writing a technical rule and to apply a given standard, with special attention to the Biomedical Engineering domain, and to clarify to him the reason why Biomedical Engineering calls for the capacity to manage this type of approach.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aims and learning outcomes deal with the construction into the student of a consciousness level about the importance in bioengineering of using rules and standards, both from the point of view of the ones which design and develop a biomedical apparatus or offer a clinical engineering service, and from the point of view of the different end users (physicians, healthcare professionals, citizens, patients). Another aim is, for Biomedical Engineering students, the knowledge of the complex value chain in performing an healthcare service and of the necessity to adopt standards in order to maximize such value, with specific reference to ICT and autonomous Internet connected biomedical instrumentation (IoT). Results of such learning are expected to be correspondent to such aims.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge of electronics, computer science and telecommunication.

TEACHING METHODS

Classical lectures in presence and in telematic modality, always in real time.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Guidelines, technical rules, technical guides. De jure and de facto standards. Difference between standard and quality mark. Why and how the need for a standard arises. Constructors and users perspective. The process of design, preliminary release and final release of a rule of voluntary nature and the necessary steps for a mandatory rule. The concept of quality standard. International and national institutions for standardization and their interactions. Interoperability and portability concepts of a product and/or service, at hardware and software level. Distance transmission standards and protocols of data and images. Telecommunication networks for Biomedical Enginering. Concept of network protocol. The ISO-OSI model and the TCP-IP model. The promotion for the adoption of a given standard and connected problems. Use cases in Biomedical Engineering, with special reference to healthcare telematics at structural and functional level.
