Stratégies rhétoriques et cadrages discursifs : la métaphore dans la communication de presse

Rethorical strategies and discourse framing: metaphor in media communication

This course is a part of the general programme of LM37/38 (this course is in common with LM94), most notably as far as the acquisition of textual analysis skills applied to media discourses is concerned.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- Identify media language devices, with particular reference to journalistic language
- Analyse the linguistic dynamics of journalistic texts through the French discourse analysis (AD) tools.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- know and remember the main notions concerning French discourse analysis;

- know and remember the main notion concerning metaphor theories (most notably concetual metaphor theory and recent developments);

- identify media discourse textual trends, most notably as far as journalistic discourse is concerned;

- analyse textual patterns in journalistic discourses using the theoretical framework of French "analyse du discours";

- identify rethorical and argumentative strategies in texts, most notably as far as the persuasive functions of metaphorical concepts are concerned.

Students will also have acquired basic skills in corpus analysis.

Practical exercises: at the end of the courses, students will be able to understand and analyse media texts and discourses in French (C1 level of the Common Framework) , most notably as far as linguistic carachteristics of journalistic and audiovisual discourses are concerned.

Plenary lessons on Teams, seminars and team working activities. Consolidation activities by Aulaweb.

The teaching modality (presence or distance learning) will be communicated through Aulaweb on the basis of tghe epidemiological context.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course presents an overview of discourse analysis tools in the framework of media communication. In particular, the course will address journalistic communication in French, with reference to the persuasive and argumentative function of metaphors in texts. The limit between information and vulgarisation will be further explored through the analysis of textual corpora.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consist of a dossier of texts analysed by the student, and an oral examination focused on the discourse analysis skills acquired during the course. Rating out of thirty.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will test the methodological skills acquired in the analysis of media discourse, through the examination of authentic texts. Oral expression skills in French will be tested as well.
