AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course the student will be able - to understand the compressibility effects in steady subsonic, transonic and supersonic flows and in unsteady flows; - to solve simple problems of preliminary design and performance verification of components for fluid machinery and airfoils with compressible flow; - to solve problems of unsteady flow of a compressible fluid in 1D ducts; - to analyse and discuss numerical and experimental results of compressible flow fields in nozzle, diffusers, airfoils and blade cascades. TEACHING METHODS Theoretical and applied lectures: presentation and discussion of the theoretical contents, numerical and experimental applications. SYLLABUS/CONTENT - Quasi-one-dimensional flow in variable-area ducts; nozzles and diffusers. - Normal and oblique shock waves, expansion waves. Shock waves-boundary layer interaction. - Unsteady wave motion: moving normal shock waves; method of characteristics for finite waves. - Steady supersonic flow: theory and applications of the method of characteristics. - Subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow on airfoils. - Transonic and supersonic cascades for axial compressors and turbines.
