The student will learn the basic numerical tecniques that form the backbone of commercial packages for CFD applications and will develop a critical attitude toward the use of the above technology, already widely used in industry for product design and development. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course is aimed at presenting current CFD methods for fluid-machinery and industrial applications. The student will learn the basic numerical tecniques that form the backbone of commercial packages for CFD applications and will develop a critical attitude toward the use of the above technology, already widely used in industry for product design and development. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Critical analysis of numerical simulations for machinery components or systems Application of commercial software platforms for the CFD simulation of fluid machinery or industrial components Design optimization concepts using numerical simulations TEACHING METHODS Lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course is organised with the following topics: governing equations and boundary conditions; discretisation methods and numerical schemes; CFD techniques for compressible and incompressible flows; introduction to turbulence modeling; grid generation methods; complex flow models (reactive, multicomponent, multiphase flows); CFD applications to fluid machinery analysis; CFD applications to industrial flow problems.
