OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide the student with the basic categories of sociological analysis needed to understand contemporary reality through the illustration of concepts used by sociology (culture and society, groups, organizations, family, deviance, inequality, education, mobility, migration, Economy, work, power), analyzing globalization and its influence on everyday life, illustrating strategies, techniques and tools of social research

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to illustrate the main concepts of sociological analysis in order to understand contemporary society, and will provide students with the primary strategies, techniques and tools used in social research.
This course will specifically focus on the issue of sustainability: the topic will be historically and critically analyzed, and all its various interpretations and by-products will be discussed. The course, supported by various case studies, will provide students with specific knowledge to approach design projects from an ecological perspective, taking into account the different renewable energy production technologies, environmental impact reduction techniques, and, most importantly, all the various production process control and management strategies (product life-cycle certification and analysis, embodied energy reduction, eco-compatible materials usage, strategies to control resources, waste, packaging, transport, etc.).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to understand the sociological concepts of culture, society, groups, organizations, family, deviance, inequalities, education, mobility, migration, economy, work, and power, and to analyze the influence of globalization on everyday life.

Students will be expected to know the main strategies, techniques and tools of social research, as well as be able to actively take part in social research by developing tools (questionnaires, interview forms) and to carry out elementary data analysis.

PREREQUISITES

Basic linguistic knowledge, ability to make connections, minimal notions of history and the main political and social changes that have occurred in the modern era.

TEACHING METHODS

Front lectures in attendance, with possibility of participation in thematic seminars on the topics discussed, Aulaweb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course provides the basics of sociology, focusing in particular on the following topics:

What is the object of sociology? The formation of modern society; The texture of the social fabric; Culture, identity, socialization; Language and communication. Standards, Deviance and Crime, Layering, Social Classes and Social Mobility, Gender and Age Differences, Breeds, Ethnicities and Nations, Family and Marriage, Education and Education, Economics and Society, Labor, Manufacturing and Consumption, Politics and Administration, Population and Social Organization in Space

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Written and oral. Students who intend to take the exam must sign up for “scritto e orale” (“written and oral”) in the appeals indicated in the exam session. Preliminary signing up to examination is compulsory.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will be realized in written mode (5 open questions, 4 in the manual and 1 in the reading book), with possible oral integration if requested by the professor or the student for further assessment of the preparation.
