The General Pathology and Immunology Science are a multidisciplinary sciences relating to human health: how and why it happens the health disturbance, it includes the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie the disease, ie etiopathogenesis and all aspects of the host defenses against infection.
The course aims to train experts in the field of midwifery. The course aims to provide a specific basis for basic materials needed for the student's education. The student will learn the fundamental skills necessary for the understanding of the biological basis and principal pathophisiology concepts of the General Pathology and Immunology presented during the course.
The course consists of 24 hours of frontal lectures.
IMMUNOLOGY
Innate immunity: cells, molecules and mechanisms of the innate immune response, local and systemic inflammation, acute and chronic inflammation, variants of acute inflammation.
Atherosclerosis and notes on cardiovascular diseases
Adaptive immunity: maturation and functional characteristics of T and B lymphocytes. Antigen presentation and T-B interaction
Immune system disorders: Allergy. Notes on immunodeficiencies, autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases
Passive immunity of the fetus / newborn: maternal-fetal interface, breastfeeding
ONCOLOGY:
benign and malignant tumors, metastases, local and systemic effects.
Epidemiology (risk and prognostic factors).
Molecular basis of tumor transformation: oncogenes, oncosuppressors and examples of neoplasms. Notes on epigenetic mechanisms (mRNA, methylation)
Cancer stem cells (CSCs), tumor-associated angiogenesis and tumor microenvironment.
Anti-tumor immune response, Natural Killer cells, escape mechanisms and tumor-associated inflammation
HEMATOLOGY

The end-of-course exam aims to evaluate the achievement of the didactic objectives of the integrated course. The exams take place on the dates indicated in the calendar. Verification is oral, conducted collegially by the teachers of each course. The grade is assigned as the weighted average of the assessments on the individual courses. In the event of the impossibility of one of the teachers, the examination for the corresponding discipline takes place by means of multiple choice quizzes, immediately corrected by the rest of the Commission in order to assign the final grade. The teachers verify the achievement of the educational objectives by asking diversified questions relating to the programs actually carried out during the lesson hours. When the educational objectives have not been achieved in all disciplines, the student is invited to better verify his knowledge and to take the exam again in its entirety. There are no student reception hours, but the learner can contact the teachers by email in order to make an appointment for further explanations or other problems.
Exam Commission
Proff. Cristina Bottino, Ezio Fulcheri, Simone Negrini, Gabriella Piatti
The assessment takes place only through the final exam which aims to ensure the effective acquisition by the student of the expected learning outcomes.
In order to pass the exam (vote of not less than 18/30) the student must demonstrate that:
- knows the principal topics
- is able to reason by connecting the various topics
- demonstrates ability to transverse and critically deal with the required arguments
