AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is the knowledge of the structure of the different parts constituting the Nervous System of man and the understanding of how they are interconnected for the performance of their normal function. Understanding what discussed during the course should provide the student with the basics to deepen specific topics of interest in the Nervous System of Man in complete autonomy.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching activity is organised in lectures. During these lectures all the issues the student has to know for the final exam will be explained and discussed with the help of visual aids.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

General Organization of the Nervous System. Meninges and CSF cavities.

The spinal cord: external and internal configuration. Organization of the grey and white matter.

Brainstem: External and internal configuration. Main nuclei of the bulb (delicate nucleus, wedge-shaped nucleus, lower olive nucleus), of the bridge (nuclei of the bridge) and of the midbrain (red nucleus, black substance). The quadrigemina sheet. Network formation.

Organization of the cerebellum: external and internal configuration. Cerebellar nuclei and cortex.

Diencephalon: organisation of the thalamus, subthalamus, hypothalamus and epitalamus.

Telencephalon: external configuration (lobes, scissors and circumvolutions). Structure of the telencephalic cortex. Telencephalic nuclei. Organization of the white matter. Generalities on the limbic system. Functional subdivision of telencephalon (associative, sensitive, effector areas, language areas). Internal configuration of telencephalon: white matter, telencephalic nuclei.

Relevant systems. The receptors of extroceptive and proprioceptive sensitivity. The pathways of general sensitivity (spine-bulb-thalame-cortical pathway, spine-cerebellar pathway, spine-thalame-cortical pathway). Specific sensitivity pathways: optical pathways (direct, reflected), vestibular pathways, acoustic pathways.

Effector systems. Motor control pathways: pyramidal and non-pyramidal pathways (definition of the nuclei of the base).

Peripheral Nervous System: Spinal nerves

Rear and posterior spinal nerves

Peripheral nervous system: organisation of the cervical plexus, brachial plexus, intercostal nerves, lumbar plexus, sacral plexus, pudendal plexus, coccygeal plexus.

Peripheral nervous system: encephalic nerves and relationship with the nuclei of the brainstem with particular reference to the trigeminal, facial, oculomotor, abducent and trochleare nodes.

Sympathetic nervous system: ortho-simpathetic and parasympathetic.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During the exam the student's communication skills will be evaluated, through which he will have to demonstrate knowledge of the different structures of the nervous system treated in class and to understand the anatomical-functional relationships.
