OVERVIEW

The course aims at providing the basic concepts on maritime transport and logistic systems, with a particular focus on port operations.

In particular the course will provide the capability of modelling, simulating, and optimizing freights and people flows in ports considering both the sea-side and ground-side points of view.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will learn:

  • the basics of maritime transport and logistic systems
  • how to formalize maritime transport problems
  • how to perform simulations to assess the performances of freight and passenger terminals

PREREQUISITES

There are not specific prerequisites

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures consist of classes (60%) and laboratory activities (40%)

Working students and students with certified SLD (Specific Learning Disorders), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements so to take into account individual learning patterns, while respecting the teaching objectives.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course is articulated in three main topics:

  1. Basics on maritime transport systems (demand/supply)

  2. Basics on logistic systems (supply chain/inventory management)

  3. Basic on port operations:

    • Ship and terminal operations

    • Port operation simulations

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consist of a practical activity on the simulations and an oral on theory.

Students with learning disorders ("Disturbi Specifici di Apprendimento", DSA) will be allowed to use specific modalities and supports that will be determined on a case-by-case basis in agreement with the delegate of the Engineering courses in the Committee for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

With the oral examination, it will be assessed:

  • the student's knowledge of the course topics

With the practical part of the exam, it will be assessed:

  • the student's capability to formalize maritime transport problems
  • the student's capability to perform simulations to estimate the performances of freight and passenger terminals
