The teaching introduces the main classes of biomedical materials, their structural and applicative properties and the mechanisms of interaction with biological tissues. In particular, emphasis is placed on the engineering of structures used in the replacement or regeneration of tissues in the human body.
The main purpose of the theoretical part of the teaching is to provide students with basic knowledge related to biomolecules, cell biology and biochemistry and biomaterials. The laboratory part aims to make the student acquire basic knowledge on biomaterial processing techniques and on their characterization.
Attendance and active participation to the teaching (lectures and laboratory activities) and individual study will allow the student: - to gain knowledge of the main classes of biomolecules of interest for engineering applications; - to apply the different chemical-physical properties of the biomolecules to different bioengineering fields; - to gain knowledge of the main mechanisms underlying gene replication and expression; - to gain knowledge of the structural / functional organization of biological tissues; - to identify the most suitable polymers for a specific bioengineering application; -to gain knowledge of main techniques for the fabrication of tissue substitutes; -to describe the characteristics of bioreactors for bioengineering. - to give examples of applications of chemical bioengineering
The teaching consists of lectures and a theoretical-practical laboratory experiemtal sections. The the lab training will be held by the teachers in charge of the teaching. At the beginning of each laboratory activity there will be a short theoretical introduction with the aim of providing the basic principles on which the techniques that will be used are founded.
Students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account the modalities of individual learning and provide suitable tools compensatory.
Slides provided in class and scientific articles on specific topics.
Ricevimento: In presence or on teams by appointment agreed via email with the teacher.

The exam consists of an oral exam divided into three main topics, one of which is chosen by the student.
The oral exam will focus on the topics covered during the lectures and will have the purpose of evaluating not only if the student has reached an adequate level of knowledge, but if he has acquired the ability to critically analyze the engineering problems that will be posed during the course. examination and which will mainly focus on laboratory experiences carried out.
