The teaching aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the historical evolution of ancient Greek from the Archaic to the Imperial age.
In the course of History of Greek Language, students will become familiar with the different dialects and the evolution of ancient Greek from the archaic age to the imperial one. This will be possible mainly by reading, translating and analysing texts from different ages.
By the end of teaching Greek language history, students will have developed greater awareness of the historical processes that led to the formation of the various dialects of the Archaic and Classical periods, and later of common Greek in its various levels. They will also have acquired the tools necessary to appreciate the gap between non-literary and literary languages, recognizing the latter as art languages (“Kunstsprachen”). Finally, they will be able to use linguistic arguments to place a literary or non-literary text in ancient Greek in time and in a given socio-cultural context.
