OVERVIEW

Course title: Post-colonialité et société contemporaine

The course fits within the general educational objectives of the LM38, particularly regarding the acquisition of communication skills in intercultural context. 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to explore specific cultural aspects of French-speaking countries in the postcolonial era. The origins of the current political and social structure will be explored to provide a comprehensive overview of the unique cultural characteristics and similarities among various countries from an intercultural perspective. These aspects will be explored through the study of contemporary, hybridized cultural and artistic productions, spanning intermedia and multimedia. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:   

  •  make use in a communicative context of the knowledge acquired on the development of the cultures of the French-speaking world; 
  •  recognize the different linguistic and cultural specificities present in cultural and artistic objects; 
  •  analyze and interpret theoretical,  informatical and narrative texts; 
  •  elaborate short texts of presentation of cultural items for a non-specific public; 
  •  present the contents and specific features of a cultural item for a non-specific public, placing it in the context of origin; 
  •  plan the display of advertising material relating to the cultural product in a professional context. 

Students who have regularly filed a certification of disability, DSA or other special educational needs are advised to contact both the contact person Prof. Sara Dickinson (sara.dickinson@unige.it) and the teacher at the beginning of the course, in order to agree on teaching and examination methods that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods and provide suitable compensatory tools. 

Students will also have sharpened their critical thinking and teamwork skills

PREREQUISITES

Students will have C1 language competence in French. 

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures in the classroom, group work (analysis of cases, preparation of presentations and exposés) and debate in the classroom, consolidation activities via Aulaweb.  

The course will be set up as group works with the Flipped classrom, Cooperative learning e Collective reading. The frequency will be monitored. 

The syllabus is unique: all lectures are recorded and all teaching materials are made available on Aulaweb; non-attending students must supplement the syllabus with one theoretical readings listed in the bibliography. 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course proposes the study of the development of the cultures of French-speaking countries in the post-colonial era and the development of written and oral communication skills. The peculiarities of the national realities of non-European territories will be addressed through the reading and analysis of essays, popular texts, literature, comics, photo-texts, in order to identify and compare cultural specificities.   

 Main topics:  

  • The Francophonie, the development of relations between France and its former colonies in the post-colonial period. 
  • Francophone cultures outside Europe  
  • Tools for textual and media analysis

The course includes a continuous assessment accompanied by a final interview.  

 

Evaluation in thirtieths 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The course includes a continuous assessment of the learners' production of three exercises in group mode and one individual exercise, and the production of a portfolio tracing each learner's learning path. Each of these activities aims to develop the learners' knowledge and skills and will be assessed individually, forming the basis of the final grade, which will be derived from the results of the in-class activities, an assessment of commitment and diligence in the class and a final interview in which the learners will illustrate their portfolio highlighting the knowledge and skills acquired.
