Students enrolled in the Literature degree programme who choose 6 ECTS credits in this subject will only be required to attend the first 40 hours of the course. The course aims to provide an overview of the main literary movements that have swept through Spain between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 21st century. In view of the very close links between political history and literary history in 20th-century Spain, part of the course will be devoted to an in-depth study of the main historical events of the period in question (the Cuban War, the Civil War, Francoism, the transition to democracy). AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The aim of the course is to deepen the historical coordinates of Spanish literature, paying particular attention to interpretative and critical elements. The specific subject of the course is Spanish fiction (novel and short story) set in the social and political context of the country. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will be able to: -understand the unique cultural and social characteristics of Spain -read, contextualise and relate a Spanish literary text to the historical and cultural environment in which it was written -formulate a critical opinion on the works examined in class or studied independently PREREQUISITES There are no specific requirements. TEACHING METHODS 60 hours of lectures in semester II. Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The first part of the course (15h) will be devoted to the introduction of the main events that characterised the History of Spain between the 19th and 21st centuries (Bourbon Restoration, Cuban War, Civil War, Franchism, Democratic Transition). In the second part of the course (45h) a path of knowledge and in-depth study of the main movements, authors and works that have characterised contemporary Spanish fiction will be developed. The student is expected to demonstrate knowledge of the bibliography on the syllabus, to be able to move between the different historical moments covered in the course and to have developed adequate skills in the analysis and contextualisation of literary texts.
