OVERVIEW

This is not just an English language class. The focus is on English vocabulary for communication professionals. Students will be introduced to themes, techniques and strategies for communication in English, with special attention devoted to neuroscience, storytelling, marketing, and the news world.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The target of this module is B2 (Upper Intermediate) competence, as per QCER (Quadro Comune di Riferimento Europeo). ), in accordance with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Roughly half of the module will be devoted to a review of grammar and vocabulary. The other half will be devoted to a further exploration of presentation skills, covering a wide range of topics, and to an examination of multimedia communication on a topic which varies from year to year. Materials not covered by textbooks will be made available on AulaWeb.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Learning outcomes can be summarized as follows:

1) acquiring or reinforcing the students’ language skills up to or above QCER B2 level

2) improving the students’ written communication skills through dedicated exercises (with specific attention to storytelling and the evaluation of sources, including visual ones)

3) improving the students’ presentation skills through a discussion of actual examples (e.g. TED Talks), and a reflection on the principal subconscious mechanisms involved in the transmission of information

By the end of the semester, students will master the mechanisms of communication and will acquire the confidence needed to write presentations, assignments, and their final theses.
