AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Course aims to provide the skills and acquisition of knowledge of drugs particularly used in ophthalmic clinical practice, their mechanism of action, indications and contraindications, and side effects.

Specifically: (a) acquisition of the basics of Pharmacokinetics, in relation to routes of administration; the distribution, metabolism and elimination of drugs; (b) knowledge of the main essential pharmacokinetic parameters; (c) understanding of the glossary of drug package inserts and their interpretation; (d) knowledge of the use of certain classes of drugs that are used in the treatment of major acute and chronic ocular diseases with emphasis on appropriateness, clinical use, and evaluation of adverse reactions; (e) knowledge of aspects of ocular toxicology and drugs used in the diagnostic setting in ophthalmology.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching involves 10 hours of frontal lessons.

Tools to support teaching:slides ( lesson materials) presented in class will be made available to the student.

Decongestants

Medications for the treatment of glaucoma

Antiallergics

Steroidal and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Chemotherapeutics for topical ocular use: Antibiotics, Antivirals, Antifungals

Ocular Toxicology

Drugs of diagnostic use

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam of pharmacology will be performed as an interview, focusing on the topics discussed during the lessons.
