AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The teaching aims to develop an actual project case proposed by companies and work sites present in the area, making use of the knowledge and skills acquired in a short space of time, under stress and by working in project teams. The aim is to simulate and anticipate the work context that students will face after graduation and to offer a direct relationship with the companies and work sites that participate in the initiative every year.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Module Objectives:

  • Introduce students to the world of concept development in design;
  • Provide sensitivity and knowledge regarding new trends in the nautical sector;
  • Equip students with a methodological approach to design, including the study of a shipyard and its characteristics.

Key educational components include fostering awareness of the recreational boating shipbuilding sector, lectures focused on understanding the elements of the design process, and hands-on activities aimed at laying the groundwork for actual design work.

As part of the module, students will acquire a design methodology geared toward the development of new design scenarios for recreational boating, supported by a partner shipyard. Activities include:

  • Shipyard visit;
  • Research and analysis;
  • Ideation and synthesis;
  • Development and drafting of graphic materials;
  • Sketches, technical drawings, models;
  • Presentation and communication of their own concepts.

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

  • Analyze and research the main characteristics of a nautical shipyard;
  • Analyze the family feeling and the distinctive stylistic and technical features of a nautical brand;
  • Apply design methods and tools to structure a complex project within a short timeframe;
  • Develop initial conceptual proposals using both graphic and digital techniques, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations, technical sketches, and conceptual models;
  • Effectively present and argue their research, analysis, and design work using appropriate technical language.

The practical design activities will enable students to learn how to manage social interactions with a collaborative attitude and constructive communication. Moreover, they will foster decision-making autonomy, team-working aptitude, coordination among individuals with different skills, and the ability to handle uncertainty.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching is delivered through different and complementary activities, the main being:

- theoretical lessons and seminaries;

- group activities (debates, brief, brainstorming, project reviews…);

- external visits;

- practical lessons (exercises and short projects).

The second part of the module is expressly dedicated to the development of the project theme organised in mixed working groups and with the support of the lecturers, a theme that will be the subject of presentation and evaluation during the examination.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module covers:

  • Concept design of vessels over 30 meters, supported by a selected shipyard;
  • Recognition, understanding, and analytical ability regarding the shipyard and its distinctive features;
  • Introduction to the design approach;
  • Approach to the development of innovative concepts, including guidelines, process, and methodology;
  • Presentation of case studies with visits to shipyards.

During the module, site visits and discussions with professionals working in the field are scheduled.
The theoretical knowledge and practical applications carried out during Intensive Design 1.1 serve as a prerequisite for the themes and design activities of Intensive Design 1.2.
The specific theme for the academic year is defined and updated at the beginning of the course and promptly communicated to the students in line with the theoretical topics covered.

Practical and design applications require students to use certain software introduced in other modules, including those from Adobe Creative Cloud, Rhinoceros for 2D and 3D project drawings, rendering programs, etc.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is conducted orally and consists of the presentation and critical discussion of the written and graphic materials developed during the module.
During the oral examination, the student is expected to:

  • Present their work using appropriate language and methodological consistency, supported by tools such as presentations and summary graphic materials;
  • Justify the conceptual choices made in the development of the project in light of the theoretical content learned, the preliminary research phase, and the visits carried out at the shipyard.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The evaluation is based on:

- Completeness and graphic quality of the papers (consistency with the assigned theme);

- Ability to analyse and synthesise, linking theory and design practice;

- Clarity of presentation and command of terminology during the oral presentation;

- Transversal skills demonstrated (teamwork management, autonomy, problem solving).
