AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aimsi:

- Provide an overview of the limits imposed by the availability of elements on the Earth's crust

- Provide a knowledge of the recovery and recycle of inorganic materials

- Provide a knowledge of the main photovoltaic technologies and issues related to their recycling

- Provide a basic knowledge of the main technology for chemical energy storage

 

Learning outcomes:

- Know the limits imposed by the availability of elements on the Earth's crust

- Know the main techniques for the recovery and recycle of inorganic materials

- Recognize the various photovoltaic technologies and their recycling limitations

- Recognize the main technologies for the storage of chemical energy

TEACHING METHODS

Classroom lectures given with the aid of power point presentations, thematic seminars on specific topics, and one lab class.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Classroom lectures:

- A periodic table view on raw materials availability

- Aluminum extraction and recycling to PV panels

- Crystalline PV technology and recycling

- Non-Silicon thin film PV alternatives including Perovskites

- Materials saving PV architectures such as Microconcentrator PV

- Glass recycling

- Alkali such as sodium Chemistry and batteries

 

Lab class:

- Copper thin film electrodeposition

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of an oral discussion covering the topics addressed during the theoretical lectures and during the experimental laboratory activities.
