OVERVIEW

The school-based curricular internship is a mandatory activity for students enrolled in the “Mathematics Education and Communication” track. It allows students to engage with real educational settings, applying the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their academic studies and further developing those needed to bridge the gap between theory and practice. It represents a distinctive element of the educational pathway.
The internship is worth 9 university credits (ECTS-CFU), divided into two parts of 3 and 6 CFU. Each credit corresponds to 25 hours of presence in school. It is recommended to complete the 3-ECTS internship in the second semester of the first year, and the 6-ECTS internship in the first semester of the second year.
The internship is carried out under the supervision of a faculty member (academic tutor) and a teacher from the host school (school tutor).
The final thesis is a separate activity from the internship. However, it may be based on the internship experience.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

An internship consists of a period of continuous full-time work at an affiliated institution or school. Each full-time week (or equivalently 25 hours) will be counted as 1 CFU.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The internship contributes to the education of graduates capable of applying the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during their studies to the observation, planning, implementation, and analysis of educational activities in real school contexts. Through hands-on experience in schools of different levels and types, students have the opportunity to integrate additional methodologies consistent with their academic path, while also refining their teaching and interpersonal skills.
The internship aims to strengthen and develop students’ operational autonomy, critical thinking, and teaching competence, by engaging them with everyday educational practice and the complexity of teaching and learning processes.
The internship contributes to the achievement of the following soft skills:
• Advanced level of functional literacy competence
• Advanced level of personal competences
• Advanced level of social competences
• Advanced level of learning to learn competence
• Advanced level of creative and project design competence

PREREQUISITES

The internship can be undertaken after attending at least the first module of the course Mathematics Education with Laboratory.
Before starting the internship, students are required to attend an introductory meeting led by the academic tutor.
It is also mandatory to complete the online safety and health at work training course. Instructions are available on the Degree Program's website.

TEACHING METHODS

The internship is carried out under the supervision of a faculty member from the Degree Program Committee (academic tutor) and a teacher from the host school (school tutor). It takes place at the host school, during a period and timetable agreed upon and recorded in the Learning Agreement.
The specific participation methods (schedule, tutor designation, etc.) are detailed in the student’s Learning Agreement.
Interns are required to keep a detailed logbook of their internship activities, following a template provided during the introductory meeting.

To begin an internship, students must complete a Proposal Form and an individualized Learning Agreement, using the platform: tirocinitesi.unige.it
