OVERVIEW

The ‘Structural and Geotechnical Design Laboratory’ aims to complete the theoretical training of civil engineers in the field of structural and geotechnical design, integrating and systematising multidisciplinary skills already acquired. The course aims to guide students in the development of a structural design in the construction field, promoting a critical and integrated approach that enhances dialogue between structural engineering, geotechnics and architectural design.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with a solid theoretical and practical foundation, together with the methodological tools necessary to tackle the design of simple structures. The learning objectives include:
•    acquiring basic knowledge of seismic design of structures;
•    the development of operational skills for numerical modelling;
•    the acquisition of basic principles relating to the design of major geotechnical works and their integration into building design;
•    the ability to define a structural design using appropriate methodological and operational tools;
•    awareness of the complexity of the design process, which involves technical, economic, architectural and social aspects.
Particular emphasis is placed on critical and multidisciplinary analysis of problems, encouraging students to consider structural design as the result of an integrated process, in which engineering and architectural skills are in constant dialogue. Structural design is therefore not conceived as an isolated activity, but as an integral part of architectural design, stimulating the ability to synthesise and take a systemic view of the project.

TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of a discussion of the exercises completed. The exercises must be submitted in the form of written reports and graphs agreed upon with the lecturer before the examination date.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The discussion aims to assess: the acquisition of theoretical knowledge relating to the topics covered in the course, the awareness gained in the work carried out, and critical thinking skills in the discussion of projects and design topics. The final assessment will take into account the following factors:
-    quality of work carried out in the exercises (in terms of completeness, accuracy, depth and design results) – 70%;
-    individual preparation demonstrated during the discussion (in terms of theoretical knowledge, critical and synthesis skills, project awareness) – 30%
