AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

To provide speech and language therapists with the fundamental knowledge required to work with children. The course will examine the development of perceptual, motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional skills during infancy and the preschool years, as well as the changes and processes underlying this development, with reference to the major theoretical models.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures supported by examples drawn from educational and clinical settings, together with guided viewing and discussion of videos addressing topics related to psychological development.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  1. Introduction to Developmental Psychology
  2. Major Perspectives and Theories of Cognitive Development: Behaviorism, Constructivism and Neo-constructivism, Information Processing (IP) approaches, and Theory of Mind (ToM)
  3. Perceptual and Motor Development
  4. Cognitive Development
  5. Emotional and Social Development

Note: The development of communicative and language skills is covered in a separate course.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination will consist of an oral assessment based on three open-ended questions. 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of the developmental stages and major theoretical perspectives concerning children's perceptual, motor, cognitive, and socio-emotional development.
