OVERVIEW

The course of clinical pathology II, III and immunohematology concerns the study of markers of various types of diseases, the study of tests useful for transfusions and organ transplants and the conservation of blood components

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquire the main notions on markers of inflammatory pathology and plasma proteins, markers of cellular damage and tumor markers; diagnosis of diabetes and renal and hepatic function. Water-salt and acid-base balance. Acquire the theoretical bases underlying organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplants and autoimmune diseases, with particular reference to compatibility tests and diagnosis and prognosis of autoimmune diseases. Acquire basic notions of immunology and genetics of the major blood group systems ABO and Rh; transfusion compatibility tests; platelet and leukocyte antigens; use of direct and indirect Coombs tests. Management and treatment of blood bags in immunohematology. Describe the organization of the transfusion service and the blood bank; recognize and list the skills of the TSLB in these structures; distinguish and explain the processing and production procedures of level I and II blood components; list, compare and differentiate the characteristics of blood components; list and describe the biological validation systems of blood components and the tests necessary to ensure the production of safe and effective blood components.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will provide students with the knowledge to understand the meaning of the variances of various groups of disease markers, their clinical correlations and the appropriateness of the prescription. Furthermore, students will be provided with the notions necessary to understand the functioning of organ compatibility and the tests that are carried out to evaluate it. Finally, the course will provide students with the knowledge necessary to understand the functioning of the tests that are used in transfusion centers, both for transfusions and in other clinical conditions in which these tests can be used.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, general pathology and pathophysiology

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons are held frontally and interactions with students will be sought as much as possible. In consideration of the health situation in our country, the lessons can be delivered online, possibly via live streaming.

Students with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes.
