OVERVIEW

Aquaculture is the practice of producing biomass of marine origin through breeding or cultivation techniques of animal and plant organisms. Aquaculture currently meets approximately 50% of the world's human needs for fish products. The course aims to provide a framework and evaluate the sustainability of aquaculture practices, taking into account the evolution over time of production and the various activities conducted worldwide.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims to make clear to students the need to evaluate the evolution over time of human breeding activities worldwide, thereby increasing the availability of alternative food resources for the increasingly overexploited wild forms.

The module aims to provide students with the tools to evaluate the sustainability of aquaculture, in its various implementations, in relation to the type of product, farming methods, feeding practices, environmental interactions, and also with respect to the regional socio-economic context.

PREREQUISITES

To effectively address the contents of the teaching, basic knowledge of ecology is recommended.

TEACHING METHODS

The module comprises lectures and seminars delivered by experts in the field.

The lectures in the classroom are delivered through multimedia presentations.

Attendance at the lessons is not mandatory but is strongly recommended.

The way lessons are taught may be modified due to emergencies that prevent in-person lessons from being held. In this case, classes will be held via the Teams platform using suitable substitute teaching tools.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral and requires the independent creation of a final presentation or thesis on a topic of the student's choice, along with responding to questions posed by the teacher on topics covered in class.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on how to prepare for the exam and the level of depth required for each topic will be provided during the lessons.

The exam will verify the actual acquisition of knowledge, which the student must be able to connect and integrate. The ability to summarise and recognise the main aspects of the topic covered will be assessed, and the ability to present the topics clearly and with correct terminology will also be taken into consideration.
