OVERVIEW

The broad field of urban planning may be defined as the set of techniques and practices aimed at pursuing the collective interests of a community through the rational use of land and territorial resources. It encompasses spatial planning as well as the various forms of territorial governance developed by communities themselves according to their specific historical and cultural trajectories. These themes are explored throughout both the lectures and the practical Laboratory activities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Urban Planning module is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of urban plans, planning instruments, and the regulatory procedures relevant to the professional practice of civil, building, and environmental engineers, starting from the applicable legal and institutional framework. The course also aims to foster students’ critical awareness of the key challenges and priorities affecting urban and territorial development.

 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Urban Planning module is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles of urban and territorial planning, including the main planning instruments and statutory plans operating at different spatial scales.
The course also aims to develop students’ awareness of the key issues addressed by planning instruments at both the urban and territorial levels, as well as their evolution over time and the governance dynamics that shape them, including zoning and boundary definitions, allocation of competencies among institutions, environmental impact management, and real estate market dynamics.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to critically analyse urban and territorial plans, including both statutory planning instruments and sector-specific plans, across different scales of intervention.
The teaching approach incorporates innovative pedagogical methods designed to promote active student engagement, collaborative learning, and group-based problem solving.
Particular emphasis is placed on the development of transferable skills (soft skills), including self-awareness, social competence, and the capacity for autonomous and lifelong learning.

TEACHING METHODS

The teaching (56 hours) consists of lectures and  some laboratory lessons, with the preparation of some elaborations developed by small groups of students.

The latter enhance the acquisition of soft skills: personal and social knowledge and the ability to learn to learn.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

During the lectures, the fundamental concepts and contents of the discipline are introduced through an approach primarily aimed at stimulating questions, critical reflection, and problem identification. These elements provide the basis for subsequent technical analysis, historical-critical inquiry, and seminar-based discussion of the topics addressed throughout the course.

In general, the notes taken during the lessons and the material on aul@web are sufficient for the preparation of the exam.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The course includes an oral test.

The elaborations carried out during the Laboratory are evaluated during the oral exam and contribute to the final grade of the exam.

There will be 3 exam sessions for the winter session (January-February-March) and 3 exam sessions for the summer session (June, July and September). During the lesson period, extraordinary sessions for students outside the course can be agreed with the teachers.
Students with a certified learning disability (DSA), a disability, or other special educational needs are invited to contact the instructor at the beginning of the lessons to discuss teaching and examination arrangements that, while respecting the learning objectives of the course, take individual learning needs into account and provide appropriate accommodations.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The primary objective of the assessment is to evaluate students’ ability to engage with and subsequently analyse urban planning instruments at different spatial scales.The oral examination is intended to assess students’ understanding of the topics covered during the lecture component of the course.Students will also be evaluated on their ability to discuss examination topics clearly, coherently, and using appropriate technical and disciplinary terminology.
