OVERVIEW

The Architectural Engineering Laboratory is focused on the design application of the contents developed in the theoretical course, with particular reference to the technological definition of the building system.

The laboratory guides students in the development of an executive design project, through the definition and control of construction systems, building components, and technical details, with the production of digital drawings using dedicated software.

Particular attention is given to the coherence between design choices, construction solutions, and building performance, through in-class activities carried out with the continuous presence and collaboration of the lecturers, in a working environment comparable to a professional design studio.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- apply the knowledge acquired in the theoretical course in a conscious and consistent way;
- develop an executive design project at the building scale;
- define construction systems and building components in relation to the architectural design;
- develop technical solutions and construction details;
- represent the project through graphical and technical drawings in digital format, at an executive design level.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

- apply the knowledge acquired in the theoretical course to the definition of technological solutions;
- develop an executive design project at the building scale, articulating construction systems and components coherently;
- define and represent construction details, controlling the relationship between materials, technologies, and performance;
- apply criteria for the selection and integration of technological systems;
- verify the coherence between design solutions, construction aspects, and performance requirements;
- produce and organise technical drawings and documents appropriate to the executive level;
- produce digital technical drawings using dedicated software (e.g. CAD), with a level of definition consistent with executive design;
- use digital representation tools for the communication and management of the project.

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching activities take place mainly in the classroom and consist of the progressive development of an executive design project through guided exercises.

The laboratory is organised as weekly activities in which students work on the project with continuous support from the lecturers, in a context comparable to a design studio.

The activities include review sessions and discussions aimed at checking design choices and ensuring the coherent development of technical solutions.

All drawings are developed in digital format using dedicated software.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The laboratory is organised as an applied design activity aimed at the progressive development of an executive design project at the building scale.

The activities include:
- critical reading of a real architectural project and its technological organisation;
- verification and revision of construction systems and building components;
- development and representation of construction details;
- verification of the coherence between design choices, technical solutions, and building performance;
- production of graphical and technical drawings at an executive level.

All drawings are produced in digital format using dedicated software.

The laboratory is mainly carried out in the classroom, with weekly design activities and the continuous presence and collaboration of the lecturers, according to a working method comparable to a design studio.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Dassori E., Morbiducci R., Building Architecture, Tecniche Nuove, Milan, 2020.

The reference book supports the theoretical and technical aspects of the laboratory activities.

Additional teaching materials (slides, case studies, and project references) are provided during the laboratory and made available through the course Team.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will consist in the submission of the complete design project, which will be discussed during an oral interview.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam will consist in the submission of the complete design project, which will be discussed during an oral interview. The assessment methods are intended to evaluate the quality and consistency of the work carried out by the student during the course, with particular attention to the following aspects:
- Completeness of the drawings: presence of all required documents, developed according to the guidelines provided during the course;
- Technical and regulatory accuracy: compliance with building regulations, consistency between the different scales of representation, and precision in the construction details;
- Clarity and graphic quality: effective use of digital drawing tools (e.g., linework, hatching, text, layout), legibility, and overall organization of the drawings;
- Argumentative skills: clarity of exposition and ability to justify design and technical choices during the oral discussion.
