OVERVIEW

The teaching unit introduces students to the knowledge of the basic concepts of chemistry, necessary for understanding the structure and properties of fuels, lubricants and materials of interest in the field of navigation.

Acquiring rigorous methodology to describe as accurately as possible the fundamental phenomena that are the basis of chemical systems; knowing how to understand and use the minimum mathematical formalism required to interpret them. Physical and chemical properties of fuels, lubrificant etc.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Chemistry teaching unit is a fundamental  training course, which provides the student  information to understand the basic concepts on the main families of materials, used in marine engineering, and their properties. Focusing on the chemical-physical, structural and safety aspects, will be provide the skills for understanding the construction and maintenance characteristics of the different  equipments on board ships. The necessary tools are also provided for a critical evaluation of the main  fuels and lubricants that can be used in the navigation field. The student must be able to keep up to date, by consulting texts, publications and regulations (mainly in English) in order to acquire a good ability to deepen the typical topics of the materials and safety sector.Theoretical knowledge is provided to develop the skills required by Functions 1,2,3,4 of Table A-III/1 and A-III/2 of the STCW Convention. Specifically Function 1: Operate fuel, lubrication, ballast and other pumping systems. Function 3: Ensure compliance with pollution prevention requirements

PREREQUISITES

For a fruitful attendace of the teaching unit are required the knowledge and skills of physic and mathematic, as aquired in the high school, .

TEACHING METHODS

The course provides a total of 6 credits (ECTS) of teaching, including 4 credits (32 hours) of online lectures, followed by 2 credits (16 hours) of in-person instruction with the support of a tutor. Online lectures will be delivered synchronously, using slides, on platforms made available to students by the University of Genoa, and recordings will be available. Each lecture will consist of an explanatory section followed by exercises completed by the instructor.

Lectures are delivered using the blackboard and/or slides and will consist of exercises and case studies. The exercises will be supported by a tutor. The teaching materials provided in class will be available on aulaweb.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

 

The course topics are divided into

4 credits - synchronous online teaching:

General and Inorganic Chemistry: Atomic structure of matter, atomic structure, electronic configuration. Periodic table and periodic properties. Formulas and nomenclature of inorganic compounds. Chemical reactions. Stoichiometry. Chemical bonds. Molecular structure. States of matter. Phase transitions and phase diagrams. Colligative properties ∆p, ∆tcr, ∆teb, osmotic pressure. Homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical equilibria. Ionic equilibria in aqueous solutions. pH of acidic and basic solutions, salts, hydrolysis, buffer solutions. Electrochemistry, batteries, standard reduction potentials. Systematics of organic compounds: overview of the main families of organic compounds: aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, functional groups. Overview of traditional and IUPAC nomenclature. Chemical and physical properties of organic compounds (solubility, volatility, etc.). Fuels: Main fuel families and their calorific value. Petroleum derivatives (diesel, marine diesel, LPG, etc.). Lubricants: Main lubricant families and their chemical and physical properties.

2 credits - in-person teaching:

Explanatory/application exercises on the syllabus with the assistance of a tutor.

The course contributes to the development of soft skills, particularly functional literacy skills.

All the materials delivered during the lectures will be available on the university website "aulaweb". Nevrtheless two chemistry book as an alternative to one another are recommended:

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The final exam consists of a written test followed by an oral exam. Admission to the oral exam is contingent on passing the written test.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The final evaluation will take into account:

class attendance; the knowledge of the course contents and the problem-solving skills tested with the written exam;

the communication skills tested during the oral exam will take into account the use of specialized lexicon and understanding of the limits of the applied methodologies.
