BSc  in Civil and Environmental Engineering – Third year - Annual

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main objective is to supply the fundamentals of geotechnical engineering, focusing the attention to the mechanical behaviour of soil (strength and deformability) and to the main related aspects frequently faced in practice. Fundamentals and design concepts for shallow and deep foundations and to retaining walls as well, are also discussed and supplied.

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

Assessment of stress states: at rest, induced, their evolution with time. Knowledge of the most important methods of analyzing geotechnical problems. Assessment and use of soil parameters in geotechnical analyses. Planning and control of in situ and laboratory investigations. Routine design methods for shallow and deep foundations and for gravity retaining walls.

TEACHING METHODS

This module uses lectures, tutorial exercises, case histories and coursework exercises
