CODE 66172 ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 3 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA 8720 (L-9) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/08 LANGUAGE Italiano TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 2° Semester TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course presents operational and functional concepts on internal combustion engines for the automotive field, on aeronautical engines (air propulsion systems) and on energy conversion plants. Moreover, the main numerical and experimental techniques for analysis of machines and energy systems will be presented. TEACHING METHODS Lectures on the different items presented in the course programme and experimental activities on different test rigs, focusing on specific arguments developed within the course. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Experimental investigation on reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine (ICE): measuring equipment, test facility set-up, ICE installation on dynamometer test bench, evaluation of engine performance, fuel consumption, ICE pollutant emissions. Experimental definition of automotive turbocharger performance. Practice: measurements of the performance maps of an engine or a turbocharging system for automotive application. Environmental impact of energy systems. Renewable energy sources: plant typologies. Distributed generation: basic aspects, plant typologies, and applications. Co-generation and tri-generation: applications of these technologies with the main energy systems. Calculation of thermodynamic balances and performance parameters for plants with the W-TEMP software: operative practice. Turbomachines for energy and aeronautical propulsion – Types of turbomachines and application fields; performance parameters; work exchanged between machine and fluid; loss sources and correlations. Turbomachines for energy production. Turbomachines for aeronautical propulsion: propulsion system architectures (turbojet, turbofan and turboprop). Experimental techniques for turbomachinery applications. Laboratory experience: experimental investigation of the aerodynamic performance of a blade cascade, using facilities and instrumentations of the Aerodynamics and Turbomachinery Laboratory of the DIME Department.
