OVERVIEW

The “Spanish Linguistics” course given in the second semester is a predominantly practical course that requires continuous attendance of lessons and autonomous learning with weekly practical exercises. Therefore, it is not recommended to include this course in the curriculum for students who cannot attend lessons or work independently on a regular basis.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to encourage and develop the autonomy of learners, future translators, interpreters and mediators in researching and using the different resources available online to document and solve problems related to Applied Linguistics. Some examples are: lexicographic sources, terminology, corpora of oral and written texts, morphological databases and the tools of Combinatorial Linguistics.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to promote the acquisition of digital, linguistic, lexicographic,  terminological and documentation skills to solve problems related to translation, interpretation and textual revision.

 

 

General competences:

  • Developing e-skills.
  • Managing individual work projects and participating in group projects
  • Understanding how to consult paper and digital documentation resources

Specific competences:

  • Acquiring linguistic-communicative awareness on the danger of interference in translation/interpretation and on interlinguistic and intercultural ambiguity.
  • Acquiring linguistic-communicative skills to understand the original text, reflect on the problems it entails and produce the target text.
  • Acquiring documentation skills for translating, interpreting and correcting a text before it is considered definitive.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons in which documentation (individual and group documentation) and tasks to be worked out individually and in groups (collaborative learning) will be put into practice, with in-class discussion and correction of the work.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination shall consist of a written test. However, students who have attended the lessons and regularly completed the tasks (individual and group assignments), having clearly acquired the skills, may be exempted from taking the final exam with a final mark agreed upon with the teacher.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test shall be divided into two parts. In the first one, translation challenges will have to be overcome; in the second one, a text in Spanish will be revised. In both tasks of the examination students must explain the documentation process followed, the resources consulted, and the choices made.
