AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The following are the principal aims of General Pathology teaching:

  • The knowledge of the aetiology and pathogenesis of human diseases;
  • The understanding of the molecular mechanisms responsible for cell damage, tumor growth and inflammation.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Be fully knowledge able of the aetio-pathogenesis of the principal human diseases;
  • Classify the different origins of diseases;
  • Clearly identify the mechanisms of cell adaptation to damage and cell death-dependent changes;
  • Explain the inflammation process and tissue repair;
  • Understand the principal molecular and morphological aspects of tumor cells.

PREREQUISITES

Basic knowledge in anatomy, histology, biochemistry, physiology

TEACHING METHODS

T

The teaching is composed of 20 hours of live lectures on all the syllabus subjects which are illustrated through specific Power Point presentations available on Aulaweb. The frontal lessons could be carried out remotely in online mode using the Teams platform.

The tutors suggest the use of reference books to further develop the various topics in order to be fully prepared for the exam.

Note that, in line with university regulations, the attendance to these lectures is compulsory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Causes of disease: injury by physical agents (radiations, thermal and traumatic  injury); chemical and drug injury.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is an oral one and it consists of a 30-minute interview in the presence of a panel of course tutors. The student should be able to demonstrate the ability to critically discuss all the subjects covered in the syllabus. During the discussion of the various topics, the committee will verify if the student has satisfactorily fulfilled the expected learning outcomes. The exam could be carried out remotely in online mode using the Teams platform.

At the end of the oral examination, the tutors will give a final mark based on an overall evaluation of the student.

The full mark 30 out of 30 with honours will be assigned when the student's knowledge is outstanding.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The verification of the student's learning process will be based on the final oral exam which is aimed at testing the acquired knowledge by the student of the expected learning outcomes.

In order to pass exam, the student has to demonstrate a sound knowledge of the etiological basis and pathogenetic mechanisms of diseases in humans and the ability to analyze the main cellular aspects.

The following elements will contribute to the final mark:

  • ability to critically discuss the requested topics;
  • accurancy, clarity, synthesis and fluency;
  • competence in the subject;
  • correct use of terminology.
