Course objective is multiscale analysis and computer simulations of chemical processes.
The attendance and active participation in the proposed training activities (frontal lessons, numerical exercises, visits to industrial realities, seminars), individual study and group discussion will allow the student:
to identify the theoretical equations present in the most used simulation programs in the field of chemical and process engineering
to distinguish the different scales of detail and the appropriate study approach in each case
to use the proposed simulation programs
to analyze real problems proposed by characteristic companies in chemical and process engineering
to critically discuss the various available solutions to the proposed problems.
Adequate communication skills will be encouraged through group exercises and interaction with the various collaborating industrial realities.
For a successful learning, basic knowledge of chemical engineering principles and chemical plants is required, but no formal prerequisites are required.
The module provides frontal lessons in the classroom (10 hours) and exercises in the computer room (40 hours). The theoretical lessons are intended to provide the theoretical principles of different computer software. Lectures in the classroom alternate with interventions by engineers from the involved industrial realities or external research staff with specific examples of process engineering applications and visits to industrial plants (subjected to the sanitary situation). The module also includes seminars on specific supplementary topics.
The transversal skills in terms of applied knowledge and understanding will be acquired through the resolution of real problems provided by the companies involved, to be carried out in groups, and the use of suitable simulation tools. Adequate communication skills will be encouraged through exercises between groups and interaction with the different industrial realities.

The teaching material used during the lessons will be available in Aulaweb. The notes taken during the lessons and the material in Aulaweb are sufficient for the preparation of the exam, but the following books are suggested as supporting texts.

It is advisable to take the exam consisting in the preparation of a poster, in groups, showing the topics covered during the module together with its oral discussion on a dedicated day. For this option, 1 exam session will be available at the end of the course with a date agreed by all the involved parties.
In case of not choosing this option, the exam will take place in the traditional way with three exam options for the ‘winter’ session (January, February and during the break provided by the Polytechnic School in Easter) and three options for the ‘summer’ session (July, September and during the autumn break provided by the Polytechnic School).
The traditional exam will consist on the elaboration of a technical report with all the contents developed during the course and its discussion in group.
No extraordinary appeals will be granted outside the periods indicated by the Polytechnic School.
The grade obtained in the teaching will be the average of the marks given in the two modules in which the teaching is divided.
The oral exam consists of the oral exposition in groups of a poster summarizing the topics covered during the course on a dedicated day. Details on the preparation for the exam will be given during the lessons.
The exam is aimed at verifying the knowledge of the theoretical fundamentals of the different studied scales, the simulation tools in chemical and process engineering and their adequate application, the ability to solve real problems present in the industrial field, the development of critical thinking and adequate oral communication skills towards different types of public. Creativity, ability to work in groups and adequate use of available resources will also be evaluated.
The exam will be evaluated by the teachers of the course and also by the participants from the involved companies.
