OVERVIEW

The course is organized in three sections of 3 CFU each to support the learning process according to the logic scheme based on initial introduction of basic concepts on signals, spectra, signal-to-noise ratio and modulation, then fundamentals of digital networks regarding topology, access and switching, finally concepts of source/channel coding and wireless systems architectures in different application scenarios.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is to provide the basic elements to understand the problems connected to the transmission of information on a communication network and the management of a communication network.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course objective is to provide a complete knowledge of thechnologies and specific solutions to transfer information using electrical signals. Fundamentals are given concerning the physical characteristics of the electrical signal in time and frequency domanins, of channel distortion, noise and attenuation. Furthermore, techniques are investigated to share the communication means among a multitude of traffics (multiple access) and the need to adapt the signal to the channel (modulation) and the need to compesate the channel distortion (equalization). Basic principles of digital networks and protocols are introduced with reference to access, authentication and quality of service. The rationale of associating the information acquired by sensors to appropriate binary representations and final to suitable electrical signals is explained, underlining the need of compression (source coding), protection (channel coding) and channel adaptation (modulation). Finally, digital wireless technologies are introduced with examples in major application scenarios concerning logistics, production and health.
