The course deals with the ship buoyancy and stability, with a specific focus on the operational life of the ship. Topics are going to be treated both from a theroetical and a practical point of view. The matter plays a siginficant role in the context of ship safety.
The course provides knowledge about the buoyancy and the stability of ships, both in intact and damaged conditions, with appropriate reference to relevant IMO regulations. Specific attention will be given also to some operational aspects e.g. to cargo handling and stowage.
The course enables the capability of:
Evaluate the ship equilibrium in a specific laoding condition and the evaluation of the relevant stability as well;
Prrevent dangerous situations in relation with shift and lift of weights, liquid free surface and inclining effects
Understand the basic physics of a ship in damaged condition
Understand the stability requirements for a ship in intact or damage condition
-
Lectures in classroom (the remote mode is provided as well);
practical applications together and individually;
interactions and discussion on some selected topics.
The IMO safety rules relevant to the intact and damaged ship stability that are available on aulaweb.
Ricevimento: place: villa cambiaso time: students are invited to send an email or to pop up in office in order to agree about the time In case students are not able to reach villa cambiaso, a remote meeting can be arranged on TEAMS

Oral exam: discussion of an assignement * previously developed and questions about the topics developed during the semester
*Assignement is about basic application of ship hydrostatics and stability (practical calculations)
With the wrtten assignement, students will be requested to give evidence about capability to apply in practice the theorethical methodologies with the proper critical attitude toward results.
Questions of the oral test are aimed to assess the capability of the students to discuss about theorethical and practical aspects of ship hydrostatics and stability.
Specific attention will be given to the capability of indicating the basic assuptions together with the input data, the target of the procedure and its rational developement.
