    OVERVIEW

The course presents to the students the normative and technical-design principles in relation to plants (or specific components) subject to particular thermal stress or pressure load for fuel service or heat transfer fluids.

It examines fluids in liquid, gaseous state or in phase transformation, analyzing the characteristics related to the process plants related to them. In addition to sizing techniques, the course aims to evaluate the associated risk and appropriate safety systems.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The purpose of the course is to provide students with the technical-functional design and regulatory principles in the field of industrial engineering and process plant for the fuel service

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students with the technical skills and criteria of functional and performance plant design, in compliance with safety regulations.

As main learning outcome, the course intends to furnish an overview that outlines an engineering approach extended to the entire life of the process plant, being able to deal with the main design, construction and operation characteristics.

    PREREQUISITES

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

    TEACHING METHODS

Frontal lessons in the classroom or lessons on line on Teams platform in function of the sanitary situation.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Main contents of the European technical regulations concerning group 1 and 2 fluids subject to pressure.

General information on group 1 viscous fluids of petrochemical derivation. Tanks and storage systems, pipeline transport and related pumping units. Pressurized lines for different fluid viscosities and related dimensional criteria. Systems for predisposing fluids to atomization. Risk analysis and safety criteria.

Generalities on group 1 gaseous fluids. Manufactured gases from oil distillation column and gasification gases. Special processes and plant schemes. Liquefied petroleum gases: tanks and distribution lines. Natural Gas. National gas pipelines, decompression groups of I and II jump. Distribution lines according to the species. Design, safety and testing criteria.

General information on group 2 heat transfer fluids. Water steam, characteristics and risk analysis. Sizing of steam lines. Design of drainage and thermal stress systems on piping. Specific components: condensate drains and expansion compensators. Selection of fixed points and guides.

    EXAMS

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    Oral Examination.

The test consists of three colloquial questions. One question concerns the technical and functional knowledge of Process Plants (plant schemes, regulation and safety criteria), a second question is inherent to a quantitative-numerical approach to a plant (a specific dimensional criterion) and the third question has a theoretical-descriptive character (a demonstration, a theoretical analysis).

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral exam allows to verify the effective degree of learning of the subject according to the formative objectives and the expected results. In particular, the candidate must demonstrate adequate skills of technical and design approach to the discipline. The evaluation parameters include the quality of the design, the criteria of compliance with the functionality and safety of the systems, the ability to develop and describe process diagrams and the ability to reason and critically analyze the proposed solutions.
