AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Acquire good command in the evaluation of the properties of inorganic compounds and in the knowledge of the main analytical techniques with particular reference to their applications in the field of materials.

PREREQUISITES

Knowledge of General Chemistry

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching organization The classic lectures (which include exercises aimed at verifying the state of learning) are alternated with innovative teaching methods aimed at active and collaborative learning by students, to make teaching, with equal efficacy, more engaging and captivating. The laboratory experiences are intended to experimentally verify some aspects of classical and instrumental analytical chemistry.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Program:
Inorganic chemistry
Completion of knowledge on chemical bond, metallic bond - Ionic, metallic, molecular, covalent solids - Structure of elementary substances - Some classes of the main inorganic compounds (oxides, hydrides, hydroxides, oxides, halides) and variation of their properties in the periodic system - Silicate structure and nod to inorganic silicate-based materials - Phase equilibria in heterogeneous systems, some of the most significant state diagrams in the context of liquid-solid binary systems - Preparation of metals by reduction processes, thermodynamic aspects, Ellingham- Preparation of metals with electrolytic processes- Methods of purification of metals: -Preparation, purification and properties of some important metals (Cu, Al, Ti)

Analytical Chemistry
Sampling.- Classical quantitative analysis. - Instrumental analytical chemistry: chromatographic and optical spectroscopy techniques

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Reference texts
Inorganic Chemistry:
During the course, educational material will be published (Aul @ WEB), but integration with appropriate texts is essential.

Any text at university level of "General Chemistry" commercially available or available in the library of the School of Sciences M.F.N. it is valid, provided it is recent (from this century). For each student it is more useful and productive to search, for each topic, the text in which the didactic approach is more appreciated and stimulating, rather than relying on a single textbook. Having said that, and bearing in mind that the list below is certainly not exhaustive, some titles, a non-binding selection of texts, are as follows:

Atkins, Jones, Laverman - PRINCIPI DI CHIMICA ‐ Zanichelli

Atkins - FONDAMENTI DI CHIMICA GENERALE ‐ Zanichelli

Kotz, Treichel, Weaver ‐ CHIMICA - EdiSES

Kotz ∙ Treichel ∙ Townsend ∙ Treichel ‐ CHIMICA ‐ EdiSES

Manotti Lanfredi , Tiripicchio FONDAMENTI DI CHIMICA ‐ CEA Milano

Petrucci, Herring, Bissonnette ‐ CHIMICA GENERALE ‐ Piccin

Petrucci, Herring, Madura, Bissonnette CHIMICA GENERALE ‐ Piccin

Silberberg ‐ CHIMICA 1° o 2° ed. ‐ McGraw‐Hill

Whitten, Davis, Speck, Stanley ‐ CHIMICA ‐ Piccin

Bertini, Luchinat, Mani – CHIMICA INORGANICA- EdiSES

Atkins et al. - CHIMICA  INORGANICA ‐ Zanichelli

To know more:
Chiorboli  - FONDAMENTI DI CHIMICA - UTET

Greenwood , Earnshaw - CHIMICA DEGLI ELEMENTI - Piccin

Callister, Rethwisch - SCIENZA ED INGEGNERIA DEI MATERIALI - EdiSES

Analytical Chemistry:

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Evaluation methods
the exam consists of a written test and an oral test to verify the achievement of the training objectives

Prerequisites: the examination of general and inorganic chemistry with laboratory is preparatory

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test consists of exercises similar to those faced during the course and descriptive questions both for the part of inorganic chemistry and for that of analytical chemistry.
The oral test, reserved for students who have successfully completed the written test (≥18 / 30), is public. The interview aims to ascertain the possession of knowledge and the level of deepening of the subject achieved by the student. The final, single mark is calculated as the average of the written and oral tests as well as the assessment of laboratory experiences and the evaluation of the relative reports.
The oral exam is always carried out by the teaching staff.
