OVERVIEW

French Language Level B1

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The object of the course is the systematic study of French in its phonological, morphological, syntactical and lexical dimensions. It also aims at developing students’ spoken and written competence with a special attention to politics, economics and law discourse.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will have acquired a level B1 competence in French, which will allow them to engage in professional activities thanks to basic linguistic competence and their ability to communicate information, suggest solutions for problems and/or to continue their university career. Students will have a sufficient linguistic repertoire to explain a concept’s main points and to express opinions on abstract and cultural topics. Students will be able to express themselves clearly, albeit with errors, and to relate simple and sequential events.

Students will also be able to understand and comment in a simple manner texts related to francophone countries international politics and to contextualize them.

PREREQUISITES

Students should know basic metalinguistic terminology, have history, geography and society basic notions, and know the organization of society and its political structures.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Course: through the reading and anlysis of essays and articles, the course will deal with the subject of French colonisation, more specifically on the recent question of “déboulonnage des statues”.

This course is connected to the “MemWar. Memorie delle guerre e dei traumi del XX secolo” research project (https://memwarunige.hypotheses.org/). Students are invited to take part in the theatre workshop (for information see https://corsi.unige.it/8740/news/5566-laboratorio-teatrale-narramondo-per-progetto-memwar).

Practical exercices: development of French B1 competences thorough practical exercices (grammar, lexicon, text reading).

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Theoretical module: final oral examination will deal with subjects dealt with during the course. Non attending students may refer to Aulaweb instructions and material.

Practical exercises:

  1. Attending students: there will be two written exams, one at mid-course and one at the end, that will aim at assessing language competence.
  2. Non attending students: final written exam, aiming at assessing language competence

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written exam will assess the level of linguistic competence. The oral exam will assess the level of spoken language competence and also the students’ ability to organize contents and to establish links between different subjects and contexts. The final evaluation is given on 30.

Attending students:

mid-course exam: 25%

final written exam: 25%

oral exam: 50%

Non-attending students:

final written exam: 50%

oral exam: 50%
