The course provides nautical engineering students with the basic knowledge of design, the fundamentals of layout and the internal distribution of pleasure boats.
The course is integrated, for nautical engineering students and for product design and nautical students, from a section on 3D modeling. The software used is Rhinocerus. The software can be used on PCs in university laboratories or installed on Personal in the Educational version.
The course aims to develop the ability to optimize the forms according to the type of use, the technologies, the costs of the product and its industrialization. It also provides advanced training in the use of drawing as a means of design expression, an in-depth study of design problems and specific knowledge of the functional components of boats.
The course consists of a theoretical part and a laboratory part with weekly checks and reviews. Parallel to the nautical project we study the Rhinoceros modeling software, both in the two-dimensional section and in the 3D section.
The educational objective of the course is to provide the student with the basic tools to tackle the design of a pleasure boat between 12 and 24 meters in length, sailing and motor boats, and to develop the design through three-dimensional modeling.
The first part of the course is based on the market survey, the comparison and the choice of the reference boat. In the second part, the layout, general plans and sections are started; in this part you start using the Rhinoceros software. In the third part the general plans are completed, the interior layout is deepened and the hull, deck and superstructure are modeled in 3D.
The expected results are those of an advanced understanding of the fundamentals of nautical design and the development of the ability to set the project of a boat, inserting it in the market portion of its competence, and to prepare the general plans that allow the description exhaustive of the same. Furthermore, the student is required to understand and apply the main commands for three-dimensional modeling and the drawing of the papers. Construction of complex surfaces such as hulls and superstructures, technical sections and calculation of areas and masses.
Basic knowledge of descriptive geometry, orthogonal projections and technical drawing.
The course is carried out through lectures by the teacher, exercises and project laboratory in the classroom.
The main topics covered in the section of the course concerning the composition can be summarized in two macro themes: the general principles of design and the specificities of the nautical project.
Project part:
KNOW THE 3D SPACE;
MORPHOLOGICAL and TYPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS;
INTRO TO THE PROJECT BOATS;
COMPOSITION OF VOLUMES and URBAN PLANNING;
GEOMETRIC PARTS OF THE BOAT;
PRINCIPLES OF ERGONOMICS;
THE ON-BOARD ENVIRONMENTS.
The three-dimensional modeling part consists of three sections: the fundamentals, design strategies, applications in the nautical field. The fundamentals investigate Rhinoceros commands and tools, basic settings and desktop customization. The strategies aim at a design aimed at solving specific problems of surface modeling (connections, starts, intersections, scaling of the model). Applications in the nautical field allow the knowledge and construction of planing and displacement hulls, superstructures and interior fittings.
Modeling part:
USER INTERFACE;
DRAW 2D - commands, dimensions, table layout, drawing of general plans;
NURBS - theory and applications of curves in three-dimensional space
SOLIDS - construction and Boolean operations;
NURBS SURFACES - types, starts, connections

Written, Oral.
The written part (project) consists of design documents, market research, sketches, collected in a book.
The oral part consists of a dissertation of the project.
The oral part of the modeling consists in the discussion of the exercises carried out and questions concerning commands, procedures and 3D modeling strategies.
The evaluation of the project part consists in the overall examination of the documents, in the consistency between the initial requisites and the proposed project, in the graphics of the construction plan drawings and the general plans.
The oral discussion of the project allows to evaluate the candidate's expressive and motivational abilities.
The oral examination of the modeling part will assess the knowledge of the main software commands and their application in the exercises carried out during the course. The student must demonstrate the ability to choose the commands and the most appropriate strategy to solve a three-dimensional modeling problem
