TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The course is carried out to provide fundamental mathematics tools, and takes place in the first semester, with a number of hours per week ranging from four to six. It is aimed at both students of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies, and students of Biotechnology.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aim: to provide basic mathematical tools suitable to the construction of "models" for solving problems

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Aims

1) Provide basic and methodological tools aimed at understanding, setting and solving problems, building and recognizing models (especially graphics).
2) Address a "scientific" approach to the study,
3) See how Mathematics provides "unifying" language and methodologies through models and structures.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to reach the ability to:

1) understand the text of an exercise / problem
2) set up solutions through suitable tools (chosen from those provided in the course)
3) solve exercises / problems in a "non-mechanical", reasoned, autonomous way
4) express results and conclusions clearly and precisely
5) develop reasoning in a "scientific" way rather than acquiring technical tools.

PREREQUISITES

Logical skills and basic mathematics knowledge (first three years of secondary school)

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons are usually "frontal", alternating "theory" with "exercises", which partly involve the students also in an "active" way, with the possible use of innovative teaching tools. Part of the lessons are held jointly for the two degree courses, part are held separately. The total number of hours is 64 for Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies and 56 for Biotechnology.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Functions of one real variable; graphs. Limits. Derivatives. Study of the graph of a function. Integrals, area calculation. Linear matrices and systems.

Specific part for Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies: vectors and elements of analytical geometry of space

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of a written part, with possible oral in some cases. The details will be communicated on Aulaweb.

Students with DSA certification ("specific learning disabilities"), disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take account of individual learning arrangements and provide appropriate compensatory tools.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

In the exam, we make sure that the student has acquired the required skills, and knows how to use and express them in correct terms. In particular, we will evaluate the ability to solve exercises relating to the main topics covered in the course, with adequate explanations on the procedure and a clearly expressed conclusion.
