    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Specific aims are the acquisition of basic knowledge about aetiology and pathogenesis of diseases, including physical and chemical causes of cell and tissue injury; neoplastic transformation and tumor classification (general oncology); responses to tissue damage: inflammation and healing.

At the end of the course, students will have gained knowledge about the different mechanims of response to cell/tissue injury and the differences among these mechanisms on the basis of aetiological factor/s and tissue type.

    TEACHING METHODS

Oral presentations supported by Powerpoint slides. Students are stronlgy encouraged to use a reference book to consolidate their knowledge.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    Definition of General Pathology.

General Aetiology: classification of the causes of disease.

Inflammation: definition; acute and chronic inflammation; phases of acute inflammation.

    Healing, tissue regeneration and fibrosis.

General oncology: definition of neoplasia and tumor characteristics; the tumorigenesis process; tumor classifications; tumor aetiology.
