    OVERVIEW

The class aim to a critical reflection on how the Italian labour market works, with two main focus: on the one hand, the role of the social construction processes of femininity and masculinity in shaping individual working lives; on the other hand, the main reforms of the Italian Labour market since the late ‘90s.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

The class offers some tools for an analytical analysis of the main trends of the Italian labour market, with some focuses on some of its main actors (young people, women and migrants).

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim is to stimulate a critical approach to the analysis of social processes that contribute to designing work biographies, as well as providing skills related to laws that regulate the labor market in which students will find themselves operating.

At the end of the course students are expected to be able to recognize and deconstruct the role of cultural models and stereotypical representations in the definition of opportunities and barriers (important competence for future teachers/educators), and know the employment contracts required by current laws.

    TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will mainly be frontal, but the professor will encourage the students to take an active role by inviting them to discuss and debate on the topics analysed. The lessons will be supported by the use of images and audiovisual material, even on a proposal of students.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The course is divided into two parts communicating with each other, but meant to facilitate those who, for reasons of credits, will attend fewer hours than planned. In the first part we will reason about the reasons of the centrality of work in contemporary western society and the relationship between women and work in the transition among generations. We will analyse the role of the construction processes of gender in the definition of working biographies, the mechanisms of exclusion and self-exclusion of women and men from certain jobs characterized as "male" or "female", as well as the cultural roots of segregation and discrimination. Finally, we'll talk about the sex markets, with a focus on the phenomenon of trafficking of women for prostitution. In the second part, the focus will be on the major transformations of Western markets from the industrial revolution to the crisis of Fordism, as well as the reforms that have been characterizing the Italian labor market since the late 90's and the human costs of flexibility.
