    OVERVIEW

    The main objective of the course is to enable future teachers to acquire 1) the basic concepts of of both infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses in Europe and Italy and  their health, economic and social burden; 2) the basic concepts of health education and promotion.

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    At the end of the course, students must possess adequate knowledge of infectious diseases and chronic-degenerative illnesses prevention and health promotion.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The main aim of the course is to raise students' awareness of the importance of disease prevention and health promotion in safeguarding the health of the individual and the community. The course will provide basic information on the principal infectious and degenerative diseases and will investigate their health, social and economic impact.

    At the end of the course, students must possess adequate knowledge of the preventive strategies implemented in Italy in order to mitigate the burden of the various diseases on the health of the population. In addition, they must be able to apply the knowledge acquired and must have sufficient skills to design and carry out educational interventions of health promotion and disease prevention aimed at different population groups.

     

     

     

    TEACHING METHODS

    Frontal lessons and group activities to develop the subjects dealt with during the class lessons.

    In case of health emergencies, lessons will take place in accordance with the University regulations.

     

     

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    Health definition and determinants of health. Health Promotion. Basic epidemiology (epidemiological measurements and epidemiological studies). Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention. Epidemiology and prevention of the principal infectious diseases. Epidemiology and prevention of the main degenerative diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases and cancers. National Prevention Plan and National Immunization Plan. Notions of first aid.

     

     

    RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

    Study material will be provided by the teacher and published on aulaweb.

    Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) certification and/or with disabilities will agree with the teacher any compensatory tools.

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    Obligatory written examination consisting of 30 “closed-answer” questions with only one correct answer (one point for each correct answer) and of one “open” question. The open question will evaluate the student's level of detailed knowledge and use of appropriate language. The “open” question will be evaluated in a range between 0 (insufficient) and 3 (excellent).

    Oral examination on request by the student, in order to improve the score obtained in the written examination.

    Students unable to attend frontal lessons will have to prepare a health education project to be submitted 10 days before the exam. See guidelines published on aulaweb.

     

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The written format has been adopted in order to ensure that the knowledge acquired during the entire course is assessed in an objective manner. This modality is deemed to be able to correctly evaluate the achievement of both the general and specific training objectives. In the oral examination, the student's level of knowledge, quality of exposition and ability to use appropriate vocabulary will be assessed.

    Students unable to attend frontal lessons for reasons within the teaching regulations must contact the teacher before the start of the lessons to agree on the additional program.

    Students with Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and/or disability are recommended to contact the professor at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods which, according to the course’s objectives, take into account the modalities individual learning and provide suitable compensatory tools.

    Students unable to attend frontal lessons for reasons within the teaching regulations must contact the teacher before the start of the lessons to agree on the additional program.
