OVERVIEW

The first part of this course presents an epistemological and conceptual framework of scientific debate on cognitive development, and a brief overview of the currently available factual knowledge. The second part of the course focuses on neo-Piagetian theories. The lab provides some knowledge of techniques for the assessment of cognitive development and intervention to enhance cognitive development used in research and in professional practice.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Lessons 24h - 4 CFU; Lab 20h - 2 CFU

Lessons

Main topics:

- introduction to the developmental psychology in the cognitive domain

- Main theories and approach to the developmental psychology in the cognitive domain (including experiments)

- Neo-piagetian theories

- Cognitive development in the typical development

- Cognitive development in the atypical development

- Critical reading of papers

Lab

Main topics:

-Instruments to investigate the development of: (a) drawing; (b) language; (c) Working Memory; (d) Executive Functions; (e) Intelligence;

-Case sudies

- Intervention to enhance cognitive development

Oral exam.

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

For the lab, there is no grade on a 0-30 scale, but only a "pass" is given if the student takes part regularly in the group meetings and carries out adequately the individual exercises and activities.

A grade in 30thies is assigned after an oral exam on the course and related readings, in which the student's comprehension, argumentative ability, and critical spirit are particularly valued.
