The course aims to give students a detailed framework of the Italian language along its historical path both in the passage from Latin to vulgar and in its literary and practical realisation as well as its modern phenomenology. To attend the course students should have a good proficiency in Italian lexicon and grammar as well as critical and rhetorical terminology.
At the end of the course, Arts students must have the following abilities: - historical Italian grammar and history of grammar competencies (grammatical changes certified in contemporary Italian); - an idea of the composition of Italian lexicon (source language, production modalities, distribution in time and in the different sectors of communication, frequency indexes); - practice of the main paper and computer tools of linguistic research; - awareness of sociolinguistic variability of the language and relations between Italian and dialects; - knowledge of the external history of Italian and the debates that accompanied it; - capacity for linguistic analysis of texts of different typologies (cultured, popular, written, oral) and of different ages (ancient and contemporary); - aptitude for linguistic and formal reading of literary texts especially the most important historical and current ones. Particular attention will be paid to the methods of teaching.
Objectives: acquiring essential tools with which to identify the most important phenomena and structures of the history of Italian, its constant elements and its evolution. Knowledge of essential bibliography on themes treated with particular reference to “classics” of the discipline.

The issue of language from De Vulgari Eloquentia by Dante and Volgar'Eloquio by Pasolini.
Programme for students taking the course for 12 CFU: Essential elements of historical grammar. Aspects of contemporary Italian. Linguistic Analysis of literary texts from the 14th-16th centuries. The issue of language and Italian for communication: diachronic framework of the discussions on vulgar for aesthetic aims and texts in vulgar of a practical nature for communication purposes.

Written and oral exam
Written test on historical grammar and phenomena of Contemporary Italian and a final oral exam in which assessment of knowledge acquired will be carried out in a discussion on the topics of the course and the linguistic analysis of texts and documents presented at lectures.
