    AIMS AND CONTENT

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Preparatory Laboratory of the II year of the Biomedical Laboratory Techniques course aims to impart to the students some notions relating to the attendance of specialized laboratories as well as the carrying out of some tests independently.

    TEACHING METHODS

    Exercise in specialized laboratories

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Electrophoresis Techniques: Introduction to the Electrophoresis Sector and Specific Proteins; electrophoretic seat setting; electrophoresis principle and methods; equipment and accessories (power supply, electrophoretic chamber, buffer, dye, densitometer); phases of the electrophoretic run (application, migration, staining, detection); fractions profile (albumin-α1-α2-β1-β2-γ) standard electrophoretic; specific proteins found in the electrophoretic trace; introduction to immunofixation and research of the Bence Jones protein on agarose gel.

Clinical chemistry-immunometry techniques: instrumental analytical techniques: spectrum photometry, turbidimetry, nephelometry and potentiometry. Principle: Lambert-Beer law, application. Calibrations. Internal and external quality control. Analytical interference. Technical evaluation of assays in clinical chemistry.

Microbiology techniques: Recognition of culture media; seeding test on culture media; recognition of bacterial colonies on different culture media; carrying out some preliminary tests to identify bacterial colonies (oxidase, catalase, etc.); slide preparation for staining; performing Gram staining; microscope slide reading with colonies recognition; reading and interpretation of manual antibiograms (kirby Bauer, E test).

Pathological anatomy techniques: Acceptance of samples in pathological anatomy; Suitability of the material and fixation according to its type. Which containers to use, which tools and their correct use. Reduction: how to prepare the bench for reduction. How to perform final cleaning and disinfection. Exercises on the creation of worksheets and dictation of the macroscopic. Exercises on the use and type of tools (scalpels, forceps, etc.). How and which biocassettes to use; how to sample the biopsies 'in full' (the exercises will consist in having the student perform samples, for example using material of animal origin). Cutting: the Microtome. Description and routine maintenance. Cutting exercises. Staining (and mounting of slides): which tools; preparation of the coloring solutions. Use of the optical microscope to ascertain the staining (internal and external quality controls). Cytology. Preparation techniques of cytological materials. Use of cytocentrifuge.
