OVERVIEW

The course is mainly designed for students following the Master's Degree in Philosophical Methods and it is aimed at in-depth study of the questions of multiculturalism and intercultural communication. The course will introduce the major theoretical questions related to this debate and highlight the inevitable links with other human sciences.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Approaching – through the analysis of historical texts and contemporary documents – major topics of the contemporary international debate such as multiculturalism, cultural identity and otherness, and the possibility for people and groups belonging to different cultures to live together. Students will focus on the "multicultural mind" model and on the concept of communication (both in its basic features and in its intercultural aspects).

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course the student should be able: to master the terminology of the subject; to treat and discuss its distinctive issues at an advanced level; to assimilate the fundamental concepts and arguments used in the presented texts in a critical and personal form.

TEACHING METHODS

Lessons will be held in presence. The teacher, upon specific request by single students, could allow them to attend lessons remotely via Teams.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The aim of the course is to propose the analysis of "classical" problems such as the definition of identity and the development of intersubjectivity starting from  both a personal and socio-cultural perspective, in order to underline finally the strong conceptual relevance of the ideas of recognition, sympathy, dialogue, universalism, pluralism, East/West, violence, hospitality, and translation. Particular attention will be devoted to the phenomenological-hermeneutical paradigm as model of intercultural communication. Some of the major topics of the contemporary intercultural debate will be analyzed more in detail, to allow students to relate themselves critically to the current paradigms of communication and cohabitation (or not) between cultures and specifically to identify their more or less hidden theoretical-philosophical assumptions.
