Students have to develop the skills to assist patients with chronic and debilitating problems, promote the residual capacity developing adaptation to disability. The following topics have to be learnt: • The demographic pattern and the epidemiology of our country and Europe; the characteristics of fragile old patient and its multidimensional clinical assessment and related scales; the approach to the old patient and to the problems related to the comorbidity, the atypical presentation of the disease, the main problems of the elderly patient with malnutrition, dehydration, risk of falls, dementia, delirium, pain and its assessment, the risk of hospitalization, the adverse effects of drugs also related to polypharmacy, the nursing skills to face the needs of a patient complex and functionally compromised, the geriatric prevention and the health education; the care of the patient who dies and the geriatric palliative care • Primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in psychiatry, the psychiatric rehabilitation; the elements of legislation and the mental illness epidemiology; the concept of mandatory medical treatment and mandatory medical examination; the knowledge of care needs and nursing interventions in psychiatric disorders including those of the eating disorder, abuse of psychoactive substances; the gambling addiction; the nursing approach to the urgencies in psychiatry and their management by the nurses; the nursing approach to psychiatric therapy including controlled intake and the psychotherapy; the therapeutic relationship with the patient and its family • Concept of health, illness and quality of life; the hospitalized patient or nursing home resident; the approach to aging, bereavement, death, pain, stress; the helping relationship and the burn-out phenomenon; the adaptation to the illness by the patient and his family • The geriatric and psychiatric rehabilitation; the nursing aspect of rehabilitation in patients with neurological, mental and internal medicine diseases; rating scales and clinical nursing approach; knowledge and use of principal assistive devices, prosthetics and orthotics; the concepts of prevention and evaluation of disability.
