OVERVIEW

This 36-hour, 6-CFU course is intended mainly for third-year Modern Languages and Cultures students taking the Languages and Cultures for Business and Tourism Curriculum. It is, however, open to all students who have passed the first year of Swedish Language.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is meant to provide students with the lexical, syntactic and stylistic skills necessary for them to properly understand specialized texts in Swedish and accurately translate them. Special attention will be given to the languages of Economics and Tourism.

A B2 vocabulary level in Economics, Business and Tourism.

The main topics of the course will be: principles of terminology, basics of lexicology and lexicography, translation of specialized texts, terminology of economy, finance, politics, tourism, arts and gastronomy, formal styles.

At the end of the course students will be able to understand written specialized texts in the fields of economics and tourism and to translate them into Italian.

Swedish language I

TEACHING METHODS

The course is made up of weekly classroom lectures (3 hours a week over 12 weeks in the second semester).
Attendance is not compulsory but strongly recommended.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

SWEDISH FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES. The specialized language of Economics and Tourism (Svenskt fackspråk: ekonomi och turism): the 36-hour teaching plan provides 6 CFUs.

This course provides students with the tools it takes to understand and translate various types of practical, specialized texts from Swedish to Italian. Special attention will be paid to Economics, Business and Tourism texts. In addition, students will compile short glossaries on our themes during the course.

There is no separate program for non-attending students. Students with disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods and to provide suitable compensatory instruments.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Lecture notes distributed during the lessons and available in Teams and Aulaweb in the second semester. Texts and other materials will be provided in Teams and Aulaweb.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam consists of an oral test at the end of the semester involving the translation of a few brief texts (in the fields of Economics, Business Administration, Politics, Art, Tourism or Gastronomy) from Swedish to Italian, a check of their lexical/terminological skills in these fields, and the translation of a brief Tourism text from Italian into Swedish. Before the oral test, there is a brief written test on translation skills.
