OVERVIEW

This module introduces students to the history of the English language and develops students’ English language skills at level C1.2 (upper C1 level).

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This module aims to

- provide students with a basic knowledge of the history of English from Old English to Present-day English, including some discussion of world-wide varieties of English;

- bring students to the C1.2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

TEACHING METHODS

The linguistics module is made up of weekly lectures (3 hours a week over 11 weeks in the second semester).  

The practical module is made up of weekly classes (4 hours a week over 20 weeks, i.e. 10 weeks per semester).

 

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

English Language I (LM) is divided into two parts, a one-semester linguistics module ("modulo teorico") and a two-semester practical module ("modulo pratico" or "esercitazioni" o "lettorato").

The linguistics module ("modulo teorico") is an introduction to the History of English, based on the following topics:

- English in the world today,

- English as a national language,

- English as a colonial language,

- English as a global language,

- English and Englishes,

- English and other languages,

- variation and change in English.

 The practical language module aims to bring students to the C1.2 (upper end of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C1 level) through reading, writing and speaking activities as well as vocabulary and grammar exercises.

The syllabus for attenders and non-attenders is the same.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Each component ("modulo pratico" and "modulo teorico") is assessed separately. The practical module is assessed at the end of the second semester through a written test (Use of English and a writing task) and an oral test (a conversation on general topics and the writing task). The linguistics module is assessed through a written test at the end of the second semester.

The exam for attenders and non-attenders is the same.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The linguistics module is assessed through a written test with open questions and exercises. The practical part is assessed through a written test (‘Use of English’ and writing) and an oral test.
