|SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR||GEO/02|
|MODULES||This unit is a module of:|
The teaching provides the basic knowledge on the following main themes: sedimentation and lithostratigraphy in the various geodynamic environments. The course also provides the necessary practical background for recognition of the main sedimentary structures in the field and for rock recognition and classification.
The attendance and participation in the planned training activities (lectures and exercises in the classroom and/or online and fieldwork) will allow the student to acquire the general knowledge of Stratigraphic Geology and Petrography necessary to face the studies in the field of geology.
Specifically, the student will be able to:
• define the main rock classification schemes
• define the main geological cycles
• explain and interpret the main litho and chronostratigraphic elements
• explain and interpret depositional environments
The course is blended and consists both of lectures in the classroom and online, exercises in the classroom and fieldwork, in agreement with the anti-COVID19 regulations. Attendance to all planned activities is strongly recommended.
Lectures are done through multimedia presentations.
The laboratory exercises are aimed at the practical application of the theoretical knowledge acquired during the lectures. In particular, group and individual exercises will be developed concerning the use of rock classification schemes and the application of stratigraphy principles and lithostratigraphic correlation rules.
The fieldwork takes place within the regional territory and is aimed at the recognition of rocks and of the main sedimentary structures and environments.
The Rock Cycle. Wilson Cycle. Introduction to rock forming minerals. Introduction to magmatic process. Introduction to the sedimentary process and to sedimentary rocks. Udden-Wentworth grain-size scales. Classification of sedimentary rocks. Bedding, beds and laminae. Introduction to sedimentary structures. Accumulation and subsidence. Walther's Law, facies, facies associations. Discordance, transgression and regression. Fundamentals of lithostratigraphy. Stratigraphic series: types, measurement and description, lithostratigraphic correlations, lithostratigraphic sections and fence diagrams. General stratigraphic units. Introduction to continental, transitional and marine depositional environments. Exercises in the classroom and filedwork.
All educational materials used during lessons will be available on AulaWeb at the beginning of the educational activity.
The following texts are recommended (available at the M.F.N. School of Science Library):
Office hours: The students' reception will be arranged directly with the teacher.

First semester: 21 september 2020 - 22 january 2021. Second semester: 15 february 2021 - 11 june 2021. For the beginning of lessons and timetable please refer to the link:
The exam is integrated with the module 1. For a detailed description of the examination modalities, see the course description (Geology 1 - code 72871).
Attendance to fieldwork is strongly recommended (working students are asked to contact in advance the teachers). Students must provide appropriate clothing for excursion (hiking shoes) and Accident Prevention Devices provided by the CCS. They will also have to provide themselves with a carpenter's ruler, a magnifying glass (X10) and a geological hammer.
