OVERVIEW

The course, structured in two modules, will describe the processes of treatment of natural gas, refinery and transformation processes of coal and biomass, the synthesis of organic intermediates, the polymerizations and the characteristics of the main products of organic industrial chemistry (detergents, solvents, lubricants, polymers, dyes, fine chemicals). Exercises related to the calculation of mass balances of complex processes will be performed.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide a thorough knowledge and a critical analysis of the main processes of petrochemistry and refinery, as well as of industrial treatments of natural gas, coal and biomass. A critical analysis will be carried out on the motivations of the solutions used in the production processes of the main chemical intermediates, and on the criteria for a correct approach to the design of an industrial chemical process in terms of economy, productivity, safety and respect for the environment. The relations between the kinetic and thermodynamic aspects and the design and optimization of the processes will be emphasized.

Furthermore, in the second module, the production processes and characteristics of the products of organic industrial chemistry, i.e polymers, detergents, lubricants, solvents, dyes and fine chemicals, will be discussed. In addition, the techniques for mass balancing of complex processes will be learned.

.

PREREQUISITES

A relatively deep knowledge of basic organic chemistry and of the fundamentals of thermodynamics and chemical kinetics is required. Furthermore, a more than basic knowledge of mathematics and physics is required. Additionally, a high level knowledge of the main unit operations is convenient.

Working students and students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning modalities.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures, numerical exercises, visits to industrial facilities.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The course includes three exam tests:

1. Oral Exam related to the topics of the Refinery and Petrochemistry module that can be sustained from the end of the lessons of this module. The maximum grade for this test will be 10/30.

2. Oral exam related to the topics of the Industrial Chemical Products module that can be sustained from the end of the lessons of this module. The maximum mark for this test will be 6/30.

3. Written Exam consisting of two exercises; the first aimed at discussing an industrial process of organic industrial chemistry not treated during the course (thermodynamic characteristics of the reactions involved, reactors, process conditions, separation and purification of reagents and / or products); the second one is aimed at numerical evaluation, applicative calculations and the drafting of material balances on a complex chemical process among those treated during the teaching. The maximum grade for this test will be 15/30. This test will be sustained at the end of the course (completion of both modules).

Working students and students with SLD, disability or other special educational needs certification are advised to contact the teachers at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take account of individual learning methods.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Through the critical discussion of the required characteristics of the products of organic industrial chemistry, and of the industrial processes dealt with in the course as well as of the single plants and reactors used, and the ability to prepare financial statements on complex processes, it will be possible to assess the knowledge and depth of understanding of the student of chemical thermodynamics, of the kinetic aspects, of the nature of unit operations and of the equipment used in the chemical industry, as well as of the management aspects of a complex process, of the economic and environmental aspects.
